November 11th is a French public holiday* which celebrates the 1918 Armistice (signed between France and Germany)
and the end of World War I.

"Armistice Day" is also a public holiday in New Zealand, Belgium and the United States of America.
In the U.S.A. however , it is called "Veterans Day" (because it includes since 1954 all American soldiers who died in past and present wars).
In the United Kingdom and most Commonwealth countries, the day is called "Remembrance Day" but it is not a public holiday. They traditionnally observe 2 minutes of silence at 11:00 a.m (time in the
United Kingdom when Armistice became effective).
In the United Kingdom, the main observance is on the 2nd Sunday of November (called "Remembrance Sunday").
